Abstract:
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is surveying technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser light. These light pulses—combined with other data recorded by the airborne system— generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics.
The Montana Lidar data Collection contains data collected in partnership with the USGS and meets the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) standards, lidar collected for use by the Montana DNRC for floodplain mapping purposes, and various other projects from various sources. This file geodatabase contains two layers: Building Footprints and Building Footprint Boundary.
The Boundary includes each Project Name and individual project download link. Footprints were not created for the entire LiDAR project area. And, not every project in the collection has building footprints as part of the deliverables.
The Building Footprints layer includes attributes for: Average Height in feet of the building, The Minimum Lowest Adjacent Grade elevation in feet of the building, and the area of the building in square feet.

Lidar Base Specifications for USGS 3DEP are available here: https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/11b4/pdf/tm11-B4.pdf
Montana does request some additional specifications outlined in the Montana Lidar Plan https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/documents/MSDI/ElevationWorkingGroup/LidarPlan_web/MT LIDAR PLAN-AccessibilityFormatted_June2019.pdf
Purpose:
The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation is collecting lidar for use in floodplain mapping. The USGS developed the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) to systematically acquire high-resolution elevation data for the nation by the end of 2023. The program provides cost-sharing towards lidar acquisitions, contracting support, quality assurance, and information-technology expertise. A phased, multi-year approach to achieve statewide lidar coverage has been proposed. Counties are prioritized for acquisition based on 1. Regional Consistency (finish partially completed counties), 2. Hazard Mapping (geological hards and high-hazard dams), 3. State and Federal Priorities, 4. Complete Statewide Coverage. The entire Montana Lidar Plan is available here: https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/documents/MSDI/ElevationWorkingGroup/LidarPlan_web/MT LIDAR PLAN-AccessibilityFormatted_June2019.pdf
